Quick Answer: Do You Need a Visa for Pakistan?
Yes, almost all foreign visitors need a visa for Pakistan. Tourists apply online for a Pakistan e-Visa through the official portal visa.nadra.gov.pk. Who Needs a Pakistan Visa?
Pakistan's visa policy is set by the Ministry of Interior and published by the Directorate General of Immigration & Passports (DGI&P), while online applications are handled by NADRA through the Pakistan Online Visa System. Since 2021, visa applications have been made online rather than on paper at embassies. Here is how it works in practice for travellers:
- Visa-free: ordinary passport holders from the Maldives (up to 3 months) and Nepal (up to 1 month) can enter without a visa. Other visa-exemption agreements cover only diplomatic and official passports.
- Pakistani-origin travellers: holders of a NICOP or Pakistan Origin Card (POC) do not need a visa.
- e-Visa: citizens of 175 countries, including the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, the EU, China, Japan and most of Asia, Africa and Latin America, can apply online.
- Special rules: India and Somalia are on a separate list (List B) with their own procedures, and Israel, Taiwan and Armenia are not on any eligible list.
What Changed in 2026?
The free "Visa Prior to Arrival" has been suspended
In August 2024 Pakistan launched a free Visa Prior to Arrival (VPA) for citizens of 126 countries. Since 1 January 2026 this option has been removed from the official portal, and travellers who used to qualify now apply for a standard paid e-Visa under the right category. There has been no official word on whether it will return.
Digital disembarkation card
Since late February 2026, visa holders can fill in their arrival (disembarkation) card in advance on NADRA's official Pak Identity (Pak-ID) app and download it to show on arrival, instead of filling in a paper form on the plane.
Types of Pakistan Visas
The government merged Pakistan's visa types into 11 main categories: Tourist/Visit, Visa in Your Inbox, Family Visit, Business, Work, Study, Religious Tourism, Official, NGO/INGO, Medical and Other. The ones most relevant to visitors are:
Tourist / Visit Visa
For holidays, trekking, sightseeing and cultural tours. 3 months, double entry. The visa most of our guests use.Visa in Your Inbox (ETA)
The new name for "visa on arrival": you apply online first and get an electronic travel authorisation to show at immigration.Group Tourism Visa
Group tourists from 24 tourist-friendly countries can get a 1-month visa on arrival when the trip is organised by a designated licensed tour operator.Business Visa
Up to 5 years, multiple entry, for nationals of 96 business-friendly countries, with a recommendation or invitation letter.Family Visit Visa
For foreigners of Pakistani origin and their foreign spouses: up to 5 years validity and 1 year stay.Other categories
Work, study, journalist, medical, religious (pilgrim), NGO and official visas, each with its own documents. The Pakistan Tourist Visa Explained
Under official policy, Pakistan missions can grant a tourist visa valid for 3 months, with a stay of up to 3 months and double entry, to nationals of 190 countries. This is the right visa for treks such as K2 Base Camp, Nanga Parbat via Fairy Meadows or Rakaposhi Base Camp, and for cultural tours of Lahore, Hunza or Chitral.
US citizens: up to 5 years
US nationals can be granted a multiple-entry visa valid for up to 5 years, with a maximum stay of 3 months per visit.
Pakistan Visa by Nationality
The process is the same for almost everyone, but the fee, validity and a few details depend on your passport. Here is what travellers from our main markets need to know.
Pakistan visa for US citizens
US citizens need a visa and apply online for the Pakistan e-Visa. The official tourist visa fee for Americans is US $60 for single entry, US $90 for multiple entries up to one year, and US $120 for multiple entries over one year. Official policy also allows a 5-year multiple-entry visa for US nationals, with a maximum stay of 3 months per visit, which is ideal if you plan to return for more treks. Our USA team in Washington DC can help American travellers plan their trip in their own time zone.
Pakistan visa for UK citizens
British passport holders apply for the standard tourist e-Visa. The tourist visa fee for UK nationals is US $60 for single entry (US $90 multiple up to one year). A tourist visa gives you up to 3 months in Pakistan, which is enough for most trekking and cultural tours, and it can be extended inside the country if needed.
Pakistan visa for Canadian and Australian citizens
Canadians and Australians follow the same online process. The tourist visa fee is US $60 for single entry for both nationalities, and both countries are on the list of tourist-friendly countries whose groups can travel with a designated tour operator.
Pakistan visa for EU citizens
Most EU citizens apply for the tourist e-Visa with fees of US $35 to $50 for single entry: for example, US $50 for Germany and US $35 for France, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium, Sweden, Poland and Ireland. Switzerland and Norway are also US $35.
Nationalities with free tourist visas
Pakistan does not charge a tourist visa fee to citizens of China, Japan, Malaysia, the UAE and Saudi Arabia, among others. You still need to apply and get the visa approved before you travel. Citizens of the Maldives and Nepal can enter without a visa.
Foreigners of Pakistani origin
If you have a NICOP or Pakistan Origin Card (POC), you do not need a visa. Foreigners of Pakistani origin without these cards, and their foreign spouses, can apply for a Family Visit Visa with up to 5 years validity.
Documents Required for a Pakistan Tourist Visa
- Passport valid for at least 6 months from your arrival date, with blank pages.
- Recent passport-style photo (digital, plain background).
- Hotel booking for your stay, or a Letter of Invitation from a Pakistani sponsor or a tour operator designated by the Department of Tourist Services (DTS).
- Travel plan or itinerary showing where you will go.
- A valid email address and a credit or debit card to pay the fee.
Depending on your nationality and travel history, the portal may ask for additional documents. Upload clear, complete scans to avoid delays.
Photo and scan tips
Use a recent colour photo taken against a plain light background, facing the camera with a neutral expression and no sunglasses, hats or filters. Scan the photo page of your passport in full, with all four corners visible and no glare. Save files in the format and size the portal requests, and check that names and numbers are readable before uploading.
Pakistan Visa Requirements by Type of Traveller
The documents you need depend on how you are travelling. Use this guide to see which situation fits you best.
Independent tourist staying in hotels
This is the simplest case. Apply for a tourist e-Visa with your passport, photo, travel itinerary and hotel bookings for your stay. Book hotels with free cancellation if your plans may change, and make sure the dates match the travel dates on your application.
Staying with friends or family in Pakistan
If you will not stay in hotels, you need an invitation letter from your host. Hosts usually provide a signed letter with a copy of their Pakistani national ID card (CNIC) and their address. Foreigners of Pakistani origin can also consider the Family Visit Visa, which is valid for longer.
Booked tour, trek or expedition
If you are travelling with a tour operator, the best supporting document is a Letter of Invitation from a DTS-licensed operator that shows your itinerary. This makes it clear to the visa officer who is responsible for your trip, especially if you are going to mountain or remote areas. With TGA this is free when you book a tour.
Group travellers
Groups travelling through a designated tour operator follow the operator's arrangements. For citizens of 24 tourist-friendly countries, official policy allows group tourists to receive a one-month visa on arrival when the trip is organised by an authorised operator, who takes responsibility for the group and confirms its departure.
Business travellers
For meetings, trade fairs or investment visits, apply for a Business Visa instead of a tourist visa. You will need an invitation from a Pakistani business organisation, a recommendation from a chamber of commerce, or a letter from the commercial section of a Pakistani mission.

Pakistan Visa Fees by Country
Pakistan charges visa fees on a reciprocal basis, so the price depends on your nationality. These are the official tourist visa fees in US dollars from the DGI&P fee schedule:
| Nationality | Single entry | Multiple (up to 1 year) | Multiple (over 1 year) |
|---|---|---|---|
| United States | 60 | 90 | 120 |

| Countries not on the list | 20 | – | – |
The extension fee is US $20 unless otherwise stated. Fees can change and may include service and bank charges, so the online portal always shows the final amount for your passport before you pay.
How Much Does a Pakistan Visa Cost in Total?
When you budget for your trip, think about three possible costs: the government visa fee, any supporting documents such as a Letter of Invitation, and any visa service if you want someone to apply for you.
| Option | What you pay | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Apply yourself with hotel bookings | Government visa fee only (free to US $60 single entry) | Independent travellers staying in hotels |
| Book a tour with TGA | Visa handled for you, free | Treks, expeditions, cultural and tailor-made tours |
Government visa fees are set by Pakistan on a reciprocal basis and are shown on the official portal before payment. Beware of unofficial websites that add large hidden charges to the same government visa.
How Long Does a Pakistan Visa Take?
Official guidance gives 7–10 working days for a tourist visa. In practice it can take longer, especially in peak trekking season (June–September). If the visa office sends your application back for corrections, the processing time starts again from the date you resubmit.
Our advice: apply 4 to 6 weeks before your trip, and before booking non-refundable flights if possible. Avoid applying at the last minute before public holidays in Pakistan, such as Eid, when offices may be closed for several days. If you are joining a fixed-date group trek, apply as soon as your booking is confirmed, so that there is time to fix any issue without missing the departure.
Some nationalities and visa categories need extra security clearance, which can take longer. Business visas can take several weeks. If your trip depends on a specific date, our complete visa service helps you submit a complete application the first time.
Letter of Invitation (LOI) for Pakistan
A Letter of Invitation is a letter from a Pakistani sponsor or company confirming your visit. For an individual tourist staying in hotels, a hotel booking is usually enough. You will need an LOI if:
- you are staying with friends or family instead of hotels;
- you are travelling on an organised tour, trek or expedition;
- you are travelling as a group through a tour operator.
For tourism, the LOI should come from a tour operator licensed by the Department of Tourist Services (DTS). A clear, official LOI showing your itinerary helps the visa officer understand your trip.
Get your Letter of Invitation from The Golden Adventure
The Golden Adventure (TGA) is a Destination Management Company registered with the Government of Pakistan through the Ministry of Tourism (DTS Licence DTS-GB-094). When you book a tour with us, we issue your official Letter of Invitation and handle your visa application for you, so you can focus on planning your trip.

Common Reasons a Pakistan Visa Is Delayed or Refused
Most problems with a Pakistan visa application are avoidable. These are the issues we see most often:
- Wrong visa category: applying as a tourist for business meetings, or the other way round.
- Mismatched details: a name spelled differently on the passport, booking and form.
- Poor photo or scans: blurred, dark or cropped images of the photo or passport.
- Vague travel plans: no clear itinerary, especially for mountain and border regions.
- Missing accommodation proof: no hotel booking and no Letter of Invitation.
- Passport validity: less than 6 months left on the passport.
- Late replies: not responding in time when the visa office asks for more documents.
Our complete visa service checks every document before submission to avoid these mistakes.
Pakistan Visa for Trekking, Climbing & Expeditions
Pakistan is home to five of the world's fourteen 8,000-metre peaks, including K2, Nanga Parbat, Broad Peak and Gasherbrum I and II, and thousands of trekkers come every summer. For most treks a tourist visa is the right choice, but some routes need extra paperwork:
- Open zones: treks such as Fairy Meadows and Nanga Parbat Base Camp and Rakaposhi Base Camp do not need a special trekking permit.
- Restricted zones: treks like K2 Base Camp and Concordia are in the restricted zone of the Central Karakoram National Park. You need a trekking permit and a licensed guide, and solo trekking is not allowed.
- Mountaineering: climbing peaks above 6,500 metres requires a mountaineering permit from the authorities, usually arranged by a licensed expedition operator.
When you book a trekking tour or expedition with TGA, the Letter of Invitation, visa application and all required permits are handled by our team.
Arriving in Pakistan
- Carry your e-Visa: keep a printed copy and a copy on your phone. Immigration stamps your passport on arrival.
- Disembarkation card: fill it in advance on the official Pak-ID app (log in, open your Inbox and choose "Fill Disembarkation"), then download it to show on arrival.
- Main entry points: the international airports of Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi are the most common for tourists.
- Police registration: most tourists do not need it. You only need to register with the Foreigners Registration Office if immigration stamps your passport with that instruction on arrival.
After Your Pakistan Visa Is Approved: Checklist
- Print your e-Visa and save a copy on your phone and in your email.
- Check the details: name, passport number, visa type, validity and number of entries.
- Book flights into Islamabad, Lahore or Karachi that fit your visa dates.
- Fill in the digital disembarkation card on the Pak-ID app before you fly.
- Buy travel insurance, with high-altitude cover if you are trekking.
- Carry photocopies of your passport and visa for checkpoints in the north.
- Share your itinerary with your tour operator and family.
How to Extend a Pakistan Visa
You can extend your visa inside Pakistan before it expires:
- Regional Passport Offices (RPOs) can extend a tourist visa up to a maximum of 6 months in total, including the original visa period.
- Northern areas: the Deputy Commissioners in Gilgit and Skardu can extend visas for tourists in the region by 3 months with one re-entry, which is very useful on long trekking trips.
- The standard extension fee is US $20 unless otherwise stated.
Overstay Charges
If you stay longer than your visa allows, foreign nationals pay these official surcharges:
| Overstay period | Surcharge |
|---|---|
| Up to 2 weeks | No surcharge |
| 2 weeks – 1 month | US $50 |
| 1 – 3 months | US $200 |
| 3 months – 1 year | US $400 per year |
Different rates apply to foreigners of Pakistani origin. Overstaying can also cause problems on future visa applications, so extend in time.
Travelling Around Pakistan on a Tourist Visa
Once you arrive, a tourist visa lets you explore most of the country. Most international visitors fly into Islamabad, the gateway to the north, while Lahore is the base for cultural tours of Punjab, and Karachi for Sindh.
From Islamabad, travellers reach the mountains in two main ways. Domestic flights to Skardu and Gilgit save time and offer spectacular views of the Karakoram, but they depend on the weather and can be cancelled at short notice. The Karakoram Highway is the classic overland route north through the Indus valley to Gilgit, Hunza and on to the Khunjerab Pass, while in summer the Babusar Pass road connects the Kaghan Valley with Chilas.
Along these roads you will pass police checkpoints where foreigners show their passport and visa and are registered. It is routine, but it is easier when your guide handles the paperwork. Always build a spare day or two into mountain itineraries for weather and road conditions, especially before your international flight home.
Popular routes for visitors include the K2 Base Camp Trek in Baltistan, Fairy Meadows and Nanga Parbat off the Karakoram Highway, and Rakaposhi Base Camp in the Nagar Valley near Hunza.
Visiting the Northern Areas: Permits & Checkpoints
A tourist visa lets you travel to most of Pakistan, including popular areas like Hunza, Skardu, Fairy Meadows and Swat. A few extra rules apply in the mountains:
- Restricted zones: some treks and expeditions, such as K2 Base Camp and other routes in the Central Karakoram National Park, need a special trekking permit and a licensed guide. Solo trekking is not allowed in these zones.
- Peaks above 6,500 m need a mountaineering permit.
- Police checkpoints: along roads like the Karakoram Highway and the Babusar Pass, foreigners show their passport and visa and are registered. Keep copies handy.
When you travel with a licensed operator like TGA, we arrange permits, guides and registrations for you. See our tours or plan a custom trip.
Best Time to Visit Pakistan (and When to Apply)
Plan your visa around the season you want to travel in:
| Region / trip | Best season | Apply for visa by |
|---|---|---|
| High-altitude treks (K2, Baltoro) | July – August | April – May |
| Northern valleys, Fairy Meadows, Rakaposhi | June – September | April – July |
| Autumn colours in Hunza and Skardu | October – November | August – September |
| Lahore, Punjab and cultural tours | October – March | 4–6 weeks before travel |
Browse our autumn tours, cultural tours and jeep safaris to find the right time for your trip.
Tips to Avoid Delays or Rejection
- Apply early: 4–6 weeks before travel.
- Match your documents: names, passport numbers and dates must be identical everywhere.
- Use a clear photo with a plain background and no glasses or filters.
- Be specific about your itinerary, especially for trekking and mountain areas.
- Choose the right category: tourist for holidays, business for meetings, family visit for relatives.
- Get an LOI from a licensed operator if you are doing an organised tour or trek.
- Check emails and your portal account regularly, and reply quickly if more documents are requested.

Pakistan Visa FAQs
Do US citizens need a visa for Pakistan?
Yes. US citizens need a visa and can apply online for a Pakistan e-Visa at visa.nadra.gov.pk. Under official policy, Pakistan can grant US nationals a multiple-entry visa valid for up to 5 years, with a maximum stay of 3 months per visit. The tourist visa fee for US citizens is US $60 for single entry.
Do UK citizens need a visa for Pakistan?
Yes. British citizens need a visa and can apply through the official e-Visa portal. The tourist visa fee for UK nationals is US $60 for a single entry, and a standard tourist visa allows a stay of up to 3 months.
Is the Pakistan visa free in 2026?
For most nationalities, no. The free Visa Prior to Arrival (VPA) programme for 126 countries was suspended on 1 January 2026, so travellers now apply for a standard paid e-Visa. Some nationalities, including China, Japan, Malaysia, the UAE and Saudi Arabia, are not charged a tourist visa fee, and citizens of the Maldives and Nepal can enter without a visa.
Can I get a visa on arrival in Pakistan?
Pakistan has replaced traditional visa on arrival with an online authorisation, called "Visa in your Inbox", which eligible travellers apply for before flying and show at immigration. Availability depends on nationality and can change, so always apply online before travel. Group tourists from certain countries can also enter on arrival when booked through a designated licensed tour operator.
How long does a Pakistan visa take?
Official guidance gives 7 to 10 working days for a tourist visa. Real processing times can be longer, and if your application is sent back for corrections the clock restarts, so apply at least 4 to 6 weeks before you travel.
How long can I stay in Pakistan on a tourist visa?
A standard tourist visa is valid for 3 months with a stay of up to 3 months and double entry. It can be extended inside Pakistan up to a maximum of 6 months in total, including the original visa period.
Do I need a Letter of Invitation for a Pakistan tourist visa?
A hotel booking is usually enough for an individual tourist. A Letter of Invitation (LOI) from a Pakistani sponsor or a licensed tour operator is needed if you are not staying in hotels, or if you are travelling on an organised tour, trek or expedition. A clear LOI from a licensed operator can also make your application stronger.
Where do I apply for a Pakistan e-Visa?
Only on the official Pakistan Online Visa System at visa.nadra.gov.pk, run by NADRA for the Ministry of Interior. The Government of Pakistan does not work with third-party visa websites, which often charge extra fees.
Can I extend my Pakistan visa?
Yes. Regional Passport Offices can extend a tourist visa up to a maximum of 6 months including the initial visa period. Tourists in the northern areas can also get an extension of up to 3 months with one re-entry from the Deputy Commissioners in Gilgit and Skardu. The standard extension fee is US $20 unless otherwise stated.
What happens if I overstay my Pakistan visa?
Overstays of up to 2 weeks carry no surcharge. After that, foreign nationals pay US $50 for up to 1 month, US $200 for 1 to 3 months, and US $400 per year beyond that. It is always better to extend your visa before it expires.
Do I need a special permit to trek to K2 Base Camp?
Yes. The K2 Base Camp trek on the Baltoro Glacier is in a restricted zone of the Central Karakoram National Park, so you need a trekking permit and must travel with a licensed guide; solo trekking is not allowed there. A licensed tour operator arranges these permits for you.
How do I get a Letter of Invitation for Pakistan?
If you are staying in hotels, a hotel booking is usually enough. For treks, expeditions, restricted areas or business trips you need an LOI from a licensed Pakistani company. When you book a tour with The Golden Adventure, we provide your official Letter of Invitation as part of your trip.
Can a tour company apply for my Pakistan visa?
Yes. A licensed tour operator can prepare your Letter of Invitation and handle your visa application for you. When you book a tour with The Golden Adventure (DTS Licence DTS-GB-094), our team takes care of the whole visa process. Plan your trip to get started.
Is Pakistan safe for tourists in 2026?
Many foreign tourists visit Pakistan every year, especially the northern areas such as Hunza, Skardu and Fairy Meadows. Like any destination, conditions vary by region, so check your government's travel advice, avoid restricted border areas, and travel with a licensed local operator who knows current conditions on the ground.
Do children need a separate Pakistan visa?
Yes. Every traveller, including children and infants, needs their own visa and passport. Apply for each family member separately on the official portal.
Can I change my visa type after arriving in Pakistan?
In general you should apply for the correct visa category before you travel, because changing category inside Pakistan is not straightforward. Choose a tourist visa for holidays and treks, and a business visa for work meetings.
Do I need travel insurance for a Pakistan visa?
Travel insurance is not always a visa requirement, but it is strongly recommended. For treks and high-altitude trips such as K2 Base Camp, choose a policy that covers high-altitude trekking and helicopter evacuation.
Can Indian citizens visit Pakistan as tourists?
Indian nationals are on List B and do not use the standard e-Visa process. Their visas are handled separately through Pakistani missions under the policy for Indian nationals, so they should contact the nearest Pakistan High Commission or embassy.
