Where to Extend Your Visa
Regional Passport Offices
The Directorate General of Immigration & Passports, through its Regional Passport Offices (RPOs), can extend a tourist visa up to a maximum of 6 months in total, including the original visa period. Extensions can also be requested through the online visa system.
Gilgit and Skardu
For tourists in the northern areas, the Deputy Commissioners in Gilgit and Skardu can extend visas by 3 months with one re-entry. This is useful on long trekking and climbing trips, when getting back to a city office is not practical.
How to Apply for an Extension
- Apply earlyStart at least two weeks before your visa expires.
- Prepare documentsPassport, current visa, photo, and proof of where you are staying and why you need more time (for example a revised trek itinerary).
- Submit and payApply online or at the office, and pay the fee.
- Keep proofCarry your receipt or approval with your passport until the extension is issued.
Extension Fees
The official schedule sets the extension fee at US $20 unless otherwise stated. Some nationalities have their own rate; the schedule lists US $65 for Canadians. Indian passport holders are not normally granted extensions. See all fees on our fees page.
Overstay Charges
| Overstay period | Surcharge |
|---|---|
| Up to 2 weeks | No surcharge |
| 2 weeks – 1 month | US $50 |
| 1 – 3 months | US $200 |
| 3 months – 1 year | US $400 per year |
Different rates apply to foreigners of Pakistani origin. An overstay can also count against you on future applications, so extend in time.
Plan Ahead Instead
If you already know your trip will be long, apply for a visa that covers it, such as a multiple-entry visa, rather than relying on an extension. Expedition teams should build weather days into the dates on their application. Ask us when you plan your trip.
