The Swat Motorway has made the drive from Islamabad much shorter.

History & People of Swat Valley

Swat was a centre of Buddhist Gandhara, known as Udyana, with hundreds of stupas and monasteries. Sites like Butkara and the Jahanabad Buddha still remain.

Later it became a princely state ruled by the Wali of Swat until 1969. The valley suffered during conflict in the late 2000s, and has since rebuilt, but security can still change.
