Where Is Kalam Valley?

The Kalam Valley lies in Swat Kohistan, in Upper Swat District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. According to Wikipedia, Kalam town sits at about 2,000 m, 99 km north of Mingora. Here the Gabral and Ushu rivers join to form the Swat River, which then flows south through the main Swat Valley.

From Kalam, side valleys spread north and west. The Ushu road leads to Matiltan and Mahodand Lake; Gabral heads north-west; and Utror lies to the west, beyond which the Badgoi Pass (3,523 m) crosses into the Kumrat Valley of Upper Dir. A plateau above the river is farmed, and the hills are covered in pine and deodar forest.

History & People of Kalam Valley

Kalam is predominantly home to the Gawri people, who speak the Gawri language, one of the Dardic languages of Swat Kohistan; Pashto and Urdu are also widely used. The 2017 census counted about 23,000 people in the area.

In recent decades the valley has been shaped by disaster as much as tourism. The 2010 floods destroyed much of the road from Bahrain to Kalam, and the 2022 floods washed away riverside buildings and stranded hundreds of tourists, some of whom had to be evacuated by helicopter. Swat also lived through a period of militancy around 2007–2009, and security concerns persist in parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa today.

Combine Kalam Valley with Nearby Destinations

Kalam is usually combined with Mingora and the Buddhist sites of lower Swat, or with Kumrat over the Badgoi Pass. For travellers who want forests and alpine lakes in an area without the same warnings, consider Gilgit-Baltistan instead, or ask us about alternatives on our destinations page.

Culture & Etiquette

Upper Swat is socially conservative. Dress modestly, ask before photographing people and never photograph women without permission. Couples should avoid public displays of affection. Respect prayer times, and remove shoes when entering homes and mosques.
