Where Is Lahore?

Lahore sits on the banks of the Ravi River in Punjab, close to the border with India. It is about 4 to 5 hours from Islamabad on the M-2 motorway and around 30 km from the Wagah border crossing.

The city has two faces. The Walled City (Androon Shehar) is a maze of old lanes, havelis, mosques and bazaars behind thirteen historic gates. Modern Lahore spreads south and east with tree-lined avenues, Mall Road, colonial buildings, parks, universities and the busy neighbourhoods of Gulberg, DHA and Model Town.

History & People of Lahore

Lahore has been an important city for more than a thousand years. It flourished under the Ghaznavids, but its golden age came with the Mughal Empire, when emperors Akbar, Jahangir, Shah Jahan and Aurangzeb built the fort, gardens, mosques and tombs that still define the city.

Later Lahore became the capital of Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s Sikh Empire, then a major centre of British India, with grand buildings along Mall Road. Today Lahoris are famous for their warmth, love of food and festivals, and the saying "Jinne Lahore nahin vekhya, o jammya hi nahin": whoever has not seen Lahore has not been born.
