How to Choose Your Trekking Gear

The right trekking gear depends on three things: altitude, season and whether you camp or stay in huts. In Pakistan, temperatures can change from 30°C in the valleys to well below freezing at base camp on the same trek. This trekking gear guide helps you pack smart: warm enough for cold nights, light enough for long days. Every item in this trekking gear guide is tested on real treks in the Karakoram.

Use the layering system. Instead of one heavy jacket, wear thin layers you can add or remove as you climb. On porter-supported treks you carry only a day pack; porters carry the rest in a duffel bag, usually up to about 25 kg.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What trekking gear do I need for Pakistan?

You need broken-in boots, a layering system (base, fleece, down, waterproof), a sleeping bag rated for the trek, trekking poles, sun protection and a day pack. High treks also need gaiters and crampons.

What sleeping bag do I need for K2 Base Camp?

A sleeping bag rated to about -20°C is recommended for K2 Base Camp and Concordia, where nights are very cold even in summer.

Can I buy trekking gear in Pakistan?

Some gear is sold in Islamabad and Skardu, but choice and quality vary. It is better to bring your boots and clothing from home and rent heavy items locally.

How heavy can my porter bag be?

On most treks a porter carries about 25 kg, which usually includes your duffel bag and some shared gear. Keep your personal bag around 12 to 15 kg.

Do I need crampons for Gondogoro La?

Yes. Crampons, a harness and a helmet are used on the Gondogoro La crossing, with fixed ropes set by the guides.

When is the trekking season in Pakistan?

Most treks run from June to September. Lower treks such as Fairy Meadows are good from May to October.
