People & Nature of Kumrat Valley
The valley is mainly home to the Gawri people, who speak the Gawri language, a Dardic tongue shared with Kalam across the pass. Life revolves around livestock, small fields and the forest, and winters are long and harsh.
The forest is the valley’s defining feature. Wikipedia lists blue pine, deodar, West Himalayan fir and Himalayan birch in the upper section and oaks lower down, with wildlife including Asiatic black bear, musk deer and Astor markhor. It also notes that deodar forest is shrinking because wood is burned for heating and cooking in winter, so visitors should never cut trees for campfires.
Tourism has grown fast. Arab News, citing provincial figures, reported more than 2.6 million visits between September 2023 and August 2024, including 533 foreigners.
