Quick answer

For almost all tourists, no. Pakistan does not issue general visas on arrival at the airport, and the free "Visa Prior to Arrival" (VPA) that 126 nationalities used from August 2024 was suspended on 1 January 2026. Apply for an e-Visa online at visa.nadra.gov.pk before you fly. Airlines can refuse boarding without an approved visa.

What Was the Visa Prior to Arrival?

The Visa Prior to Arrival (VPA) was introduced in August 2024. Citizens of 126 countries could apply online, free of charge, and usually received approval within about 48 hours. It was often described as Pakistan's "visa on arrival", although it had to be approved before you flew.

What Changed on 1 January 2026

Since 1 January 2026 the VPA option has been removed from the official visa portal. The change happened without a public announcement, and there has been no official word on whether it will return. Travellers who used to qualify now apply for the standard paid e-Visa, which takes around 7–10 working days and requires proof of accommodation such as a hotel booking or Letter of Invitation.

Some third-party websites still advertise a free or instant Pakistan visa on arrival. Rely only on the official portal, visa.nadra.gov.pk.

Can Anyone Still Get a Visa on Arrival?

A few special arrangements exist in Pakistan's visa policy, such as group tourism organised by designated licensed tour operators and specific arrangements for some nationalities. These are narrow, can change, and are not something an independent tourist should rely on. If you think one applies to you, confirm it in writing before you travel.

Citizens of the Maldives and Nepal, and holders of a NICOP or Pakistan Origin Card, do not need a visa at all.
