Karachi stretches along the coast of Sindh in southern Pakistan. It is the country’s financial centre and biggest port, and home to people from every part of Pakistan.
Key areas for visitors are Saddar with its colonial buildings, Clifton and DHA by the sea, and the old markets around Empress Market. The M-9 motorway links Karachi with Hyderabad and the rest of Sindh.
Karachi grew from a small fishing village into a major port under British rule in the 19th century, leaving behind grand stone buildings like Frere Hall and Empress Market. It was Pakistan’s first capital after 1947 and the birthplace of the country’s founder, Muhammad Ali Jinnah.
Today it is a city of migrants and cultures, from Sindhi and Baloch to Urdu-speaking, Pashtun, Punjabi and Parsi communities, and this mix shows in its food and festivals.
From the founder’s mausoleum to colonial landmarks and sea views, here is what to do in Karachi.
The white marble mausoleum of Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the founder of Pakistan. The changing of the guard is worth watching.
A pink stone palace from the 1920s, now a museum with changing exhibitions.
