At the Foot of Rakaposhi

The Rakaposhi Base Camp Trek is one of the finest short treks in the Karakoram and a perfect introduction to trekking in Pakistan. From the village of Minapin in the Nagar Valley, a good trail climbs beside the Minapin Glacier to the meadows of Hapakun and on to Tagaphari, the Rakaposhi Base Camp, right beneath the great ice walls of Rakaposhi (7,788 m).

From base camp we cross the Kacheli Glacier to Diran Base Camp, below the pyramid of Diran (7,266 m), and climb the ridge above camp for a panorama of the Hunza peaks. The trip ends with a free day in Karimabad, among the historic forts of the Hunza Valley. Our local team takes care of camping, meals and porters so you can simply enjoy the mountains.

WHY THIS TREK

Why Choose the Rakaposhi Base Camp Trek?

Few treks in Pakistan give you so much in so little time. On the Rakaposhi Base Camp Trek you walk only four days on the trail, yet you sleep beneath one of the most impressive mountain walls in the Karakoram. Rakaposhi rises almost straight up from the Nagar Valley, so the views begin on the first morning and grow bigger with every step.

The route is well suited to fit walkers who are new to high mountain trekking. Camps are short, the trail is clear, and you never go much above 3,700 m. That makes the Rakaposhi Base Camp Trek a great first step before longer journeys such as the K2 Base Camp Trek or the Nanga Parbat Base Camp Trek via Fairy Meadows.

Because the trek starts close to Karimabad, it is easy to add time in the Hunza Valley before or after. Many guests combine the Rakaposhi Base Camp Trek with Attabad Lake, Passu and the Khunjerab Pass. Read our guide to the best time to visit Pakistan to choose your dates, and check our Pakistan visa guide and travel insurance advice before you book.
