Where Is Chitral & Kalash?

Chitral is Pakistan’s north-western district, close to the Afghan border. The town sits on the Chitral River, with 7,708 m Tirich Mir towering to the north.

The three Kalash valleys lie south-west of the town. To the east, the road climbs to the Shandur Pass, the border with Gilgit-Baltistan and home of the world’s highest polo ground.

History & People of Chitral & Kalash

Chitral was a princely state ruled by the Mehtars until 1969; their fort and the Shahi Mosque still stand by the river.

The Kalasha are a small community with their own language, beliefs and festivals such as Chilam Joshi in May, Uchal in summer and Chawmos in December. Their culture is fragile and should be visited with great respect.
