Quick answer

Yes, you need a permit. The Biafo–Hispar traverse passes through Central Karakoram National Park and treks such as Lukpe La and Shimshal–Braldu–Snow Lake are listed as restricted. Foreigners need a trekking permit through a licensed tour operator, a licensed guide, and an experienced glacier team with rope and crevasse gear.

The Biafo–Hispar Traverse

The traverse links the Biafo Glacier from Askole with the Hispar Glacier down to Nagar, crossing Hispar La at about 5,150 m. Together the two glaciers form a route of roughly 100 km on ice, past Snow Lake, a vast basin of glacier ice at the head of the Biafo. It is a serious expedition-style trek for fit, experienced trekkers.

Permit Rules

  • A trekking permit is required because the route lies in Central Karakoram National Park, and related routes such as Lukpe La and Shimshal–Braldu–Snow Lake are restricted.
  • Permits are issued by the Gilgit-Baltistan Tourism Department on applications from licensed tour operators.
  • A licensed guide is required, and the team must carry glacier safety equipment.
  • CKNP has waste-management rules; everything carried in must be carried out.

Fees are set by notification and were reduced across all seasons in May 2025; we confirm current amounts when we quote.

Safety on the Glaciers

Upper Biafo and Hispar La have hidden crevasses, so the team should rope up, and porters and staff must be properly equipped and insured. Weather can close the pass for days. Go with an operator who has run the route before.

When to Go and When to Apply

July and August are the main months. Apply for the permit 4 to 6 weeks before departure, together with your Pakistan visa and Letter of Invitation.
