Yes. The K2 Base Camp trek, the Baltoro Glacier, Concordia and the Gondogoro La are in a restricted trekking zone. Foreign trekkers need a trekking permit issued through a licensed Pakistani tour operator, with a licensed guide and insured staff. Permits are now handled by the Gilgit-Baltistan Tourism Department. Open, Restricted and Closed Zones
Pakistan divides trekking areas into three types. Knowing which one your route is in tells you what paperwork you need.
| Zone | What it means for foreign trekkers |
|---|---|
| Open zone | No trekking permit needed; a guide is recommended |
| Restricted zone | Trekking permit through a licensed tour operator, a licensed guide and insured staff |
| Closed zone | Areas near the Afghan border, the Line of Control and Siachen; off-limits to foreign tourists |
The Baltoro–Concordia–Gondogoro La–Hushe route is one of the best-known restricted treks, along with Masherbrum Pass, the Panmah Glacier and Lukpe La.
The K2 Trekking Permit
- Who issues it: the Gilgit-Baltistan Tourism Department, which took over permits from the federal level and now issues them on applications from licensed operators.
- Who applies: a licensed Pakistani tour operator on your behalf. Independent trekkers cannot apply on their own.
- What you need: passport copy, Pakistan visa, itinerary and the operator's licence details.
- Guide and staff: a licensed guide is required, and porters and staff must be insured.
The route also crosses Central Karakoram National Park (CKNP), which has its own conservation and waste rules.
Trekking Fees
Gilgit-Baltistan raised trekking and climbing fees sharply in early 2025, then the GB cabinet reduced them across all seasons in May 2025. Exact trekking fees are set by notification and can change from season to season, so we confirm the current amount when we quote your trip. For our guests, permit fees are included in the tour price.
When to Apply and When to Go
The Baltoro season runs from late June to early September. Apply for the permit 4 to 6 weeks before departure, after your Pakistan visa is approved or alongside it. Leave spare days in Skardu for weather, as flights from Islamabad are often delayed.
Climbing K2 or Another Peak?
Trekking to K2 Base Camp needs only the trekking permit. Climbing K2, Broad Peak, the Gasherbrums or any peak above 6,500 m needs a separate expedition permit and royalty.

The Golden Adventure (DTS-GB-094) is based in Gilgit-Baltistan and runs the K2 Base Camp Trek every season. We apply for your permit, provide a licensed guide and insured porters, and carry the paperwork through every check post, at no extra service fee.
