History & People of Nagar Valley
Nagar was a princely state for centuries, ruled by Mirs of the Maglot dynasty from their capital at Nagar Khas. Hunza and Nagar were close neighbours and frequent rivals. In December 1891 British forces under Colonel Algernon Durand attacked the fort at Nilt during the Hunza–Nagar Campaign; the fort fell, and Nagar was kept as a princely state under British influence.
The Mir of Nagar acceded to Pakistan in November 1947, and the state was abolished in the early 1970s under Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, when it became an ordinary part of Gilgit-Baltistan’s administration.
Most people in Nagar are Twelver Shia Muslims, which sets the valley apart from largely Ismaili Hunza. Burushaski is the main language, with Shina spoken in some lower villages. Expect a more traditional, conservative atmosphere than in Karimabad, and a very warm welcome if you show respect for local customs.
