Quick answer

In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, foreigners should complete the KP online Foreign Tourist Registration (launched July 2025). Visiting the Khyber Pass and the former tribal districts has historically required permission from the district administration and an escort, and some areas are closed. In October 2026 the UK advises against all travel to Peshawar, Khyber district and the merged tribal districts.

KP Foreign Tourist Registration

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Culture & Tourism Authority's online registration for foreign tourists is the starting point for travel in the province, including Swat, Upper Dir and Chitral. Register before your trip and carry the confirmation.

Peshawar City

Peshawar, one of South Asia's oldest cities, is known for the Qissa Khwani Bazaar, Mahabat Khan Mosque and its food. Visitors who go should travel with local support, keep a low profile and follow police advice. Note the current UK advice against all travel to the city before deciding.

The Khyber Pass and Torkham

The Khyber Pass runs west from Peshawar to the Afghan border at Torkham. Historically, foreigners needed permission from the Khyber district administration and an armed escort to visit, and access has been suspended at times. Border crossings with Afghanistan can change quickly. We do not currently recommend the Khyber Pass for tourists.

The Former Tribal Districts

The former FATA areas, now merged districts such as North and South Waziristan, Kurram and Bajaur, are largely closed to foreign tourists and are covered by "do not travel" advice from several governments.

Alternatives for Gandhara Heritage

For Gandhara Buddhist heritage, Taxila near Islamabad and Takht-i-Bahi are popular. Our Buddhist pilgrimage tours plan routes around current advice.
