OVERVIEW

An 8,000 m Peak in the Shadow of K2

Broad Peak (8,051 m) takes its name from its long, broad summit ridge, more than a kilometre wide. It was first climbed in 1957 by an Austrian team that included Hermann Buhl, and it stands right beside K2 at the head of the Baltoro Glacier.

The Broad Peak Expedition follows the normal route on the west face and ridge. It is less technical than K2 and is often chosen as a first 8,000 m peak in the Karakoram, though the final ridge to the true summit is long and serious. We provide permits, the approach trek, base camp services and support on the mountain.

WHY THIS EXPEDITION

Why Choose the Broad Peak Expedition?

The Broad Peak Expedition is a strong choice for climbers who have summited a 7,000 m peak and want a first 8,000 m mountain in the Karakoram. The route is mainly snow and ice slopes, with the challenge coming from the altitude and the long summit day.

Because base camp is close to K2, Broad Peak is often combined with a K2 Expedition or used as acclimatisation for it. If you want a step up from a 7,000 m peak first, see our Spantik Expedition.

Before you travel, read our Pakistan visa guide and our advice on travel insurance; helicopter rescue cover is mandatory. Browse all our mountain expeditions in Pakistan.

Plan the rest of your trip

BEFORE YOU GO

Good to Know

  • Experience

You should have climbed at least one 7,000 m peak and be confident on fixed ropes, crampons and steep snow.

  • Acclimatisation

We plan several rotations up to Camp 3 before the summit push. Many climbers use oxygen on summit day, but some climb without it.

  • Permits & Royalty

Every expedition needs a climbing permit from the Gilgit-Baltistan government, a peak royalty fee and, for most peaks, a liaison officer. Our team handles the application, briefing and debriefing in Islamabad or Skardu.

  • When to Go

June to August is the Broad Peak climbing season, with the best weather usually in July. Read our guide to the best time to visit Pakistan.
