OVERVIEW

The Handprint of Guru Nanak Dev Ji

Gurdwara Panja Sahib in Hasan Abdal is one of the most sacred Sikh shrines. According to tradition, when a boulder was rolled towards Guru Nanak Dev Ji, he stopped it with his hand, leaving his handprint (panja) in the stone, beside a spring that still flows into the sarovar.

The Panja Sahib Yatra starts in Islamabad, just an hour away. We spend unhurried time at the gurdwara for darshan, kirtan and langar, and visit the Mughal gardens of Hasan Abdal and the old town. During Vaisakhi in April, Panja Sahib welcomes large numbers of yatris.

BEFORE YOU GO

Good to Know

  • Darshan & Seva

We plan unhurried time for darshan, ardaas, kirtan and seva at each gurdwara, and langar is served at most of them. Tell us your wishes and we will plan the day around them.

  • Visas for Yatris

We provide a Letter of Invitation for most nationalities, including Sikhs from the UK, Canada, the USA and Europe. Indian yatris usually travel under special government arrangements, and we can advise on the process.

  • Etiquette

Cover your head, remove your shoes and wash your feet before entering. Tobacco and alcohol are not allowed in gurdwaras. Modest dress is expected.

  • When to Go

October to April is the most pleasant time. Vaisakhi in mid-April is the biggest celebration at Panja Sahib. Read our guide to the best time to visit Pakistan.
