OVERVIEW

Telling the Kalash Story with Respect

The Kalash, a small community with their own faith and culture in the valleys of Chitral, are one of the most filmed groups in Pakistan, and not always respectfully. Good documentary work here depends on trust, consent and people who know the community.

The Kalash Documentary tour works through long-standing contacts in the valleys. Our fixer arranges interviews, explains which rituals may and may not be filmed, and makes sure families are asked for consent and fairly compensated. We can time the shoot for Chilam Joshi, Uchal or Chaumos.

WHY THIS TOUR

Why Choose the Kalash Documentary Tour?

The Kalash Documentary tour is for crews who want to tell the Kalash story honestly and respectfully. Our contacts in the valleys open doors that are closed to most visitors, while protecting the community.

Travellers can visit the same valleys on our Kalash Spring Festival Tour or Kalash Summer Festival Tour.

BEFORE YOU GO

Good to Know

  • Filming Permission

Foreign crews usually need permission (NOC) to film in Pakistan, and some locations need extra local permits. Apply early: we help with the paperwork and liaise with the authorities.

  • Drones

Drone use is tightly controlled in Pakistan and needs special permission, which is not always granted. Tell us early if you plan aerial shots, and we will advise on what is possible.

  • Consent & Respect

Some Kalash rituals and places are sacred and may not be filmed. Our fixer explains what is allowed, asks for consent and arranges fair compensation for families and participants.

  • When to Shoot

Time the shoot for Chilam Joshi (May), Uchal (August) or Chaumos (December), or come outside festivals for quieter daily life. Read our guide to the best time to visit Pakistan.
