OVERVIEW

The Western Pillar of the Himalaya

Nanga Parbat (8,126 m) stands alone at the western end of the Himalaya, rising high above the Indus River. First climbed solo by Hermann Buhl in 1953, it has a fearsome reputation and some of the biggest mountain faces on earth, including the Rupal Face and the Diamir Face.

The Nanga Parbat Expedition follows the Kinshofer route on the Diamir Face, the most-used route on the mountain. We drive from Islamabad to Chilas, trek through the Diamir Valley to base camp at about 4,200 m, and provide a full base camp team and support for your climb.

WHY THIS EXPEDITION

Why Choose the Nanga Parbat Expedition?

The Nanga Parbat Expedition is for experienced 8,000 m climbers. The Kinshofer route includes steep rock and ice on the Kinshofer Wall and a long summit day, and avalanche conditions must be watched closely.

Base camp is reached by road and a short trek, without depending on mountain flights. Friends and family can visit the mountain on our Nanga Parbat Base Camp Trek via Fairy Meadows or the Rupal Face Trek.

Before you travel, read our Pakistan visa guide and our advice on travel insurance; helicopter rescue cover is mandatory. Browse all our mountain expeditions in Pakistan.

Plan the rest of your trip

BEFORE YOU GO

Good to Know

  • Experience

You need previous 8,000 m experience and strong skills on mixed rock and ice, fixed ropes and steep snow.

  • Acclimatisation

We plan rotations up to Camp 3 before the summit push. Most climbers use oxygen above Camp 4, though some climb without it.

  • Permits & Royalty

Every expedition needs a climbing permit from the Gilgit-Baltistan government, a peak royalty fee and, for most peaks, a liaison officer. Our team handles the application, briefing and debriefing in Islamabad or Skardu.

  • When to Go

June and July are the Nanga Parbat climbing season, before the monsoon brings more snow in August. Read our guide to the best time to visit Pakistan.
