Where Is Leepa Valley?

Leepa Valley is in Hattian Bala district of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), east of the capital Muzaffarabad. Distances quoted range from about 83 km to 105 km, and the trip can take up to seven hours because of the mountain road. The route follows the Jhelum to Hattian Bala, then climbs from Reshian over Reshian Gali, which one source puts at about 3,200 m, before dropping to around 1,677 m on the far side.

The valley is divided into five sectors, Nowkot, Kasirkot, Dao Khan, Leepa and Chananian, and is home to about 50,000 people. Across the river lies Indian-administered Kashmir; the Line of Control (LoC) can be seen from most places in the valley.

History & People of Leepa

Before 1947 the valley was part of Karnah tehsil in Kupwara district, and since partition it has been divided by the LoC. From 1989 it suffered almost three decades of intermittent cross-border shelling that hit civilian homes. Since India and Pakistan recommitted to the 2003 ceasefire in 2021, the valley has had long periods of calm, and residents have rebuilt homes and started welcoming domestic tourists.

That calm is fragile. Officials reported ‘post-to-post firing’ in the Leepa sector in April 2025, and in May 2025 the two armies exchanged fire along the LoC for several days before a ceasefire on 10 May. Local life revolves around farming: rice, maize, apples, cherries, walnuts and honey are the valley’s prized products.

MUST-SEE EXPERIENCES

Top 8 Things to Do in Leepa Valley

If access is possible, Leepa is a place for slow drives, village walks and photography rather than set-piece sights.

  1. 01
    Culture

    See the traditional wooden houses

Homes are often built entirely of wood over several floors: animals in the basement for warmth, fodder above, the family’s rooms higher still and grain stored at the top.

  2. 02
    Nature

    Walk among the rice terraces

Terraced paddies step down the valley sides, bright green in summer and gold at harvest. Rice and barley grow alongside maize.

  3. 03
    Nature

    Catch the autumn walnut colours

Tall walnut trees turn yellow, red and orange in autumn, giving the valley its most photographed look.

  4. 04
    Viewpoint

    Cross Reshian Gali

The zig-zag climb from Reshian through pine forest to the pass gives wide views back over the Jhelum valley before the descent into Leepa.

  5. 05
    Viewpoint

    Look out from Dao Khan

The Dao Khan area offers some of the best views over the valley floor and its villages.

  6. 06

Unpolished red rice with chicken curry is a remembered meal for many visitors, and local honey and walnuts make good souvenirs.

  7. 07

    Visit Chananian village

One of the best-known villages, Chananian shows the valley’s farming life up close. Always ask before photographing people or homes.

  8. 08
    Nature

    Drive the Jhelum valley

The road from Muzaffarabad to Hattian Bala runs along the Jhelum with waterfalls near Chanari and before Chakothi, a scenic warm-up for the mountain section.

Best Time to Visit Leepa Valley

The valley is open for tourism roughly from May to November; for the rest of the year the pass is under snow and landslides can block the road. Summer brings green rice terraces, while autumn turns the walnut groves yellow, red and orange. Late spring and early summer can still bring snow on the pass.

Even in season, access can be suspended at short notice if tension rises on the LoC. Always check current conditions just before travel.

A privately hired jeep can complete a round of the valley in 6–10 hours, but most visitors who are allowed in stay at least one night.

Getting Around the Valley

Within the valley you travel by jeep on narrow roads through the villages, or on foot. There is no regular public transport between villages, and roadside shops are few, so carry food and water. Expect army and police checkpoints throughout.

Where to Stay in Leepa

Options are basic and limited. Published accounts mention a Tourist Rest House, a Forest Rest House and tents provided by the AJK Tourism Department, and two rest houses at Dao Khan. Accommodation can fill up when domestic tourists arrive, so travellers are advised to bring camping gear and their own food.

Suggested AJK Itineraries

If Leepa access is approved (3 days from Muzaffarabad)

Day 1 Muzaffarabad to Hattian Bala and Reshian, jeep over the pass. Day 2 village walks and viewpoints. Day 3 return.

If it is not

Choose destinations away from the LoC. The hill stations of Murree and the Galiyat, a few hours from Islamabad, offer pine forests and walking without the border restrictions. Our Neelum Valley guide covers AJK’s other famous valley, but note that much of it is also close to the LoC, so the same advisory checks apply.

What to Pack for Leepa

  • Original passport, visa and printed copies of any permission letter.
  • Warm layers for the pass, even in summer.
  • Food, water and snacks for the drive.
  • A sleeping bag or camping gear if rest houses are full.
  • Enough cash for the whole trip.
  • Modest clothing and a scarf for women.

Combine Leepa with Nearby Destinations

Most AJK trips start from Islamabad. If border access is not available, the best alternatives for forest and mountain scenery near the capital are Murree and the Galiyat, or the Kaghan Valley further north in summer (check that region’s own advisories too).

Culture & Etiquette

Leepa is a conservative, rural Muslim community that has lived through years of shelling. Be sensitive: do not photograph military posts, soldiers or anything across the LoC, ask before photographing people, and dress modestly. Offer to pay for hospitality, as households have limited resources.

Practical Travel Tips for Leepa Valley

Travel advisories: please read this first

The UK FCDO advises against all travel within 10 miles of the Line of Control and against all but essential travel to the rest of AJK. Leepa Valley lies on the LoC, so it falls inside that zone. The US State Department says do not travel to the immediate vicinity of the LoC, and notes that various AJK districts require advance permission.

Permits for foreigners

When Pakistan relaxed its NOC rules in 2019, AJK areas along the LoC remained closed to foreigners. In practice this means foreign passport holders should assume they cannot enter without specific official permission, which is not guaranteed. Domestic visitors are also advised to check access rules in Hattian Bala before reaching Reshian. We will tell you honestly whether a visit is possible for your dates, and suggest alternatives if not.

Connectivity and money

Carry enough cash from Muzaffarabad or Hattian Bala, and do not count on card payments.

Leepa Valley Highlights at a Glance

Wooden houses, terraced paddies and walnut groves make this one of the loveliest rural landscapes in Kashmir, and one of the least visited.

Its position on the Line of Control is the deciding factor for foreign travellers. Plan around permissions and advisories first, scenery second.

For a local view of how the 2021 ceasefire changed life in the valley, read this Kashmir Times feature.
