Broghil Valley at a Glance

Broghil Valley is the northernmost valley of Upper Chitral, protected since 2010 as Broghil Valley National Park. It is remote, high and wonderfully empty, but reaching it takes several days of rough jeep travel and special permission for foreigners, so it suits experienced travellers with time and patience.

Where Is Broghil Valley?

Broghil Valley lies at the very top of the Yarkhun valley in Upper Chitral district, about 250 km from Chitral town. To the north, across the Hindu Kush, is Afghanistan’s Wakhan Corridor; to the east is Gilgit-Baltistan and its Qurumbar (Karambar) National Park. There is no formal border crossing here, only high passes.

The national park covers about 1,348 km² and ranges from roughly 3,217 m to 5,696 m. Much of it is open grassland and wetland: around 30 freshwater lakes and some 3,400 hectares of peatland and lakes, ringed by glaciers.

History & People of Broghil

The Broghil area has long been a crossroads between Chitral, the Wakhan and the Pamirs. Today the valley’s small population is mostly Wakhi, with Kyrgyz and Sarikoli communities too. Families move yaks, sheep and goats to summer pastures and spend long winters under deep snow, roughly five to six feet a year by one account.

The area was declared a national park in 2010 to protect its wetlands and wildlife, and it drew international attention in October 2019 when Prince William and Catherine visited during their Pakistan tour. Services remain basic: many villages lack reliable roads, health care and electricity, so visitors should come prepared to be largely self-sufficient.

MUST-SEE EXPERIENCES

Top 8 Things to Do in Broghil Valley

Broghil is about landscape and people rather than sights, so build in slow days.

  1. 01
    Adventure

    Trek to Karambar Lake

The classic trek here is an out-and-back of about 30 km from Lashkargaz to Karambar Lake, usually 3–4 days. Wikipedia puts the lake at 4,272 m; other sources say about 4,300 m.

  2. 02
    Culture

    Join the Broghil Festival

The 2026 festival ran from 20 to 23 July, organised by the Broghil Students Organization with PTDC. Expect buzkashi, donkey or yak polo, dancing, handicrafts and Wakhi food.

  3. 03
    Nature

    Walk the Lashkargaz meadows

Lashkargaz is the main summer settlement and trekking base. Wide grassland, grazing yaks and peat-fringed pools make it ideal for gentle acclimatisation walks.

  4. 04
    Culture

    Stay with a Wakhi family

There are no hotels, only homestays and campsites. Sharing salt tea and bread in a Wakhi house is the best introduction to life at 3,000 m-plus.

  5. 05
    Nature

    Look for wildlife

The park records 23 mammal and 120 bird species, from Siberian ibex and Himalayan brown bear to golden eagle and bearded vulture. Sightings of rarer animals such as snow leopard are very unlikely.

  6. 06
    Viewpoint

    Watch the Yarkhun valley unfold

The long drive up from Mastuj follows the Yarkhun river past villages, glaciers and gorges. It is slow, but it is also part of the experience.

  7. 07
    Adventure

    Cross the Darkot Pass (experts)

Experienced trekkers can continue from Chikar over the Darkot Pass, about 4,700 m, into Gilgit-Baltistan’s Yasin valley. This needs a full support team and good weather.

  8. 08
    Nature

    Photograph the peatland lakes

Dozens of small lakes scattered over the valley floor reflect the snow peaks on calm mornings, with almost no other visitors in frame.

Best Time to Visit Broghil Valley

The usable season is short. Trekking sources recommend mid-July to early September, when the snow has gone from the meadows and the weather is most stable; June can work, but tracks may still be blocked. From October the cold sets in fast, and in winter the valley is effectively cut off.

The Broghil Festival is usually held in July (20–23 July in 2026). Check the 2027 date before you commit, because organisers announce it only a few weeks ahead.

How to Get to Broghil Valley

Allow at least two long days by 4×4 from Chitral, and more if roads are damaged. One traveller described the whole trip from Islamabad as about 40 hours of driving.

LegTypical timeNotes
Islamabad → ChitralLong day by roadVia the Lowari Tunnel; PIA flights to Chitral when operating
Chitral → MastujAbout 4 hoursVia Booni; partly paved
Mastuj → KishmanjaAbout 10 hoursUp the Yarkhun valley on a rough jeep track
Kishmanja → Ishkarwaz / LashkargazAbout 5 hours+Jeep track; landslides can force a 6–8 hour walk from Ishkarwaz
Lashkargaz → Karambar Lake1–2 days on footAbout 15 km each way

Times come from published trip reports and vary a lot with weather and road damage. Build in at least one spare day each way.

Getting Around Broghil

Once in the valley you move on foot, or with pack animals and porters arranged locally. Keep your jeep and driver for the return, as there is no regular public transport and no fuel station beyond the lower Yarkhun valley.

Where to Stay in Broghil

There are no hotels. Visitors sleep in Wakhi homestays or in tents at sites such as Lashkargaz and Karambar Lake. On the way up, Booni and Mastuj have simple guesthouses, and you may overnight in a village homestay in the Yarkhun valley. A good four-season tent and sleeping bag are essential.

What to Pack for Broghil

  • Four-season sleeping bag and warm down jacket: nights fall below freezing.
  • Waterproof boots and gaiters for bogs and stream crossings.
  • Sunscreen, sunglasses and lip balm for strong high-altitude sun.
  • Water filter or tablets, a first-aid kit and altitude medication after talking to your doctor.
  • Enough cash for the whole trip: there are no banks or ATMs.
  • Small gifts for host families, such as tea or dried fruit, are appreciated.

See our trekking gear guide for a full kit list.

Combine Broghil with Nearby Destinations

On the way north you pass Mastuj, where the road also branches to Shandur Pass. Further south, Chitral town and the Kalash valleys are the obvious cultural add-on. Karambar Lake can also be reached from the Ishkoman side of Gilgit-Baltistan, close to Ghizer and Phander, which makes a one-way traverse possible for well-supported groups.

Culture & Etiquette

Wakhi families are famously hospitable, but resources are scarce at this altitude, so offer to pay for meals and lodging and never assume food is free. Dress modestly, ask before photographing people, especially women, and keep campsites spotless: there is no waste collection, so carry all rubbish out.

Practical Travel Tips for Broghil

Travel advisories

Please read the official advice before planning. The US State Department advises against all travel to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, which includes Broghil. The UK FCDO advises against all travel within 10 miles of the Afghanistan border, and much of the valley lies close to that line. Travel against this advice may invalidate your insurance.

Permits

Foreigners need prior permission for this border area. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s online Foreign Tourist Registration portal (launched July 2025) is the starting point, and soldiers at checkposts such as Ishkarwaz record IDs. Permission is not guaranteed, so plan a fallback route. Our NOC guide explains the system.

Health, money and connectivity

You will sleep above 3,000 m, so acclimatise gradually and know the signs of altitude sickness. Medical help is days away, so carry insurance that covers remote evacuation. Expect no mobile signal for most of the trip.
