OVERVIEW

Over the Khyber Pass

The Khyber Pass between Peshawar and Kabul is one of the most famous mountain passes in history, crossed by armies, traders and travellers for thousands of years. Beyond it lie the gardens of Kabul, the cliffs of Bamiyan and the Blue Mosque of Mazar-i-Sharif.

The Pakistan Afghanistan Overland route begins with Islamabad, Taxila and Peshawar and crosses at Torkham into Afghanistan. At present the Torkham crossing is not open for foreigners entering Pakistan, and many governments advise against travel to Afghanistan, so this route is on request only and will only run when it is legal and considered safe.

BEFORE YOU GO

Good to Know

  • Border Status

In 2026 the Torkham crossing has been reopened only for controlled movement of Afghan nationals, with no entry into Pakistan for foreigners. Many governments also advise against all travel to Afghanistan. We will only run this route when the border is open to foreigners and travel is considered safe.

  • Visas

You need visas for both Pakistan and Afghanistan, and Afghanistan rules can change quickly. Check your own government's travel advice before considering this route.

  • Partners Abroad

In Pakistan our own team runs your trip. In the second country we work with trusted local partners, so you have guides, drivers and hotels arranged on both sides of the border.

  • When to Go

April to October is the usual season, when Bamiyan and the passes are accessible. Read our guide to the best time to visit Pakistan.
