Hingol National Park at a Glance

Hingol National Park is Pakistan’s largest national park, about 6,100 km² of eroded mountains, river estuary, mud volcanoes and empty beaches on the Makran coast. It is also home to the Hinglaj Mata cave temple, the country’s biggest Hindu pilgrimage site. Balochistan carries a US “Do Not Travel” rating and a UK advisory against all travel, so read the safety section before anything else.

Where Is Hingol National Park?

The park stretches along the Arabian Sea coast of southern Balochistan, across parts of Lasbela, Gwadar and Awaran districts. Its eastern edge is roughly 190–200 km north-west of Karachi, and the Makran Coastal Highway, completed in 2004, runs right through it.

The Hingol River, which gives the park its name, cuts through the mountains to form an estuary on the coast. Inland, wind and water have carved soft mudstone cliffs into shapes that look like ruined cities, sphinxes and standing figures.

Nature & Heritage of Hingol National Park

Declared in 1988, the park protects a remarkable mix of habitats: arid subtropical forest in the north, dry mountains in the west and coastal semi-desert and drifting sand near the sea. Wildlife includes Sindh ibex, Balochistan urial and chinkara in the hills, marsh crocodiles in the river, and sea turtles, Indo-Pacific dolphins and migratory birds along the coast.

It is also sacred ground. The cave temple of Hinglaj Mata, on the west bank of the Hingol River about 19 km inland, is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas of Hindu tradition, and the annual Hinglaj Yatra each April is Pakistan’s largest Hindu gathering (background). Nearby mud volcanoes, including Chandragup, are revered as part of the same pilgrimage.

Is Hingol National Park Safe? The Honest Answer

The US State Department rates Balochistan Level 4: Do Not Travel, for any reason, citing terrorism and kidnapping, with attacks targeting civilians, foreign nationals and religious minorities. The UK FCDO advises against all travel to Balochistan. Travelling against this advice is likely to invalidate standard travel insurance.

These warnings apply to the coast too. In April 2019 gunmen stopped buses on the Makran Coastal Highway near Buzi Pass and killed 14 passengers (Dawn). Major events such as the Hinglaj Yatra are held under heavy army, Frontier Corps, police and Levies protection, but that does not change the official advice for independent visitors.

Foreigners have generally needed official permission and an armed escort to travel in Balochistan, and rules can change with little notice.

Our honest view: if you are not a Hindu pilgrim with a specific reason to visit Hinglaj, there are safer places in Pakistan to see dramatic desert and coast. If you still want to go, speak to us first so we can explain the current situation before you book anything.

Best Time to Visit Hingol National Park

If travel is possible, the cooler months from October to March are the most comfortable; the Makran coast is extremely hot in summer. The Hinglaj Yatra takes place over three to four days in April; in 2026 it ran from 17 to 20 April and drew an estimated 300,000 people.

How to Get to Hingol National Park

The only realistic access is by road from Karachi on the Makran Coastal Highway. Travel only in daylight, with an experienced driver and the required permissions.

Fuel, food and mobile signal are scarce once you leave the Hub area; carry water and supplies.

Where to Stay

There are no hotels suitable for foreign visitors inside the park; facilities at Kund Malir are minimal huts. Visits are normally done as long day trips from Karachi, with the security and permission arrangements that requires. During the yatra, pilgrim groups use temporary camps and langar run by volunteers.

What to Pack

  • Plenty of water and food for the whole day
  • Sun hat, sunglasses and high-factor sunscreen
  • Closed shoes for mud volcano slopes and rocky paths
  • Modest clothing for the temple
  • Original passport, visa and any permission letters
  • Fully charged phone and power bank; signal is limited

Culture & Etiquette

Balochistan is deeply conservative. Dress modestly, ask before photographing people and never photograph checkpoints or security personnel. At Hinglaj and Chandragup you are a guest at a sacred site: remove shoes where asked, follow pilgrims’ lead and do not climb on the mud volcano during rituals unless invited.

Practical Travel Tips

Advisories: Balochistan is US Level 4 (Do Not Travel) and under a UK advisory against all travel; see the safety section above and recheck both advisories shortly before any trip.

Insurance: check your policy wording carefully; most standard policies exclude areas under a government advisory against all travel. See our travel insurance policy.

Visas and permissions: a Pakistan visa is required (our visa guide), and foreigners usually need additional permission for Balochistan. Every TGA tour includes a free Letter of Invitation, but an LOI is not a security permit.

On the road: do not travel after dark, keep stops short, and follow instructions at checkpoints.
