Ratti Gali Lake at a Glance

Ratti Gali Lake sits at about 3,683 m in the Neelum Valley of Azad Jammu and Kashmir. Fed by meltwater from the surrounding peaks, it stays icy cold all year and is only realistically accessible in the short summer season. It is also close to the Line of Control, which matters greatly for foreign visitors.

Where Is Ratti Gali Lake?

The lake lies in the mountains on the south side of the Neelum Valley, part of the greater Himalaya, in Pakistan-administered Kashmir. The nearest village on the Neelum road is Dowarian, about 75 km beyond the district headquarters at Athmuqam.

The Neelum Valley itself runs alongside the Line of Control (LoC), the de facto border with Indian-administered Kashmir. An AP report in May 2025 described the valley as less than 3 km from the LoC in places, and in some sections the river itself forms the line. Read the safety section below before you plan anything.

Landscape & Wildlife

This is a classic alpine glacial lake, fed by snowmelt and surrounded by rugged cliffs, waterfalls and meadows. In midsummer the slopes bloom with primulas, potentillas and gentians.

The wider area is home to the Himalayan monal pheasant, Himalayan brown bear and Kashmir stag, though the mammals are rarely seen. Growing visitor numbers have raised environmental concerns, so low-impact camping matters here more than ever.

MUST-SEE EXPERIENCES

Top 7 Things to Do in Ratti Gali Lake

If you do go, these are the experiences that make the journey worthwhile.

  1. 01
    Nature

    The lake shore

Walk around the shoreline for changing views of the water against snowy ridges. The lake is cold year-round, so admire it rather than swim.

  2. 02
    Nature

    Wildflower meadows

In July and August the meadows below the lake are full of alpine flowers. Early morning light is the best time for photographs.

  3. 03
    Adventure

    The jeep track from Dowarian

A rough 4×4 track climbs about 16 km from Dowarian towards base camp, taking around 2–2.5 hours. It is an adventure in itself, but vehicle safety is critical.

  4. 04
    Adventure

    Base camp to the lake

From base camp, a hike of about 1–2 hours leads up to the water. Horses are usually available for those who prefer to ride.

  5. 05
    Adventure

    Camping under the stars

Tented camps operate below the lake in season. Nights at this altitude are cold even in summer, so bring a warm sleeping bag.

  6. 06
    Adventure

    The Kaghan crossing

Experienced trekkers can approach from Kaghan, via Jalkhad, Noori Lake, the Ratti Gali pass and Hans Raj Lake, before descending to Dowarian. Allow at least three days with camping gear.

    Hans Raj and Noori lakes

On the Kaghan route, these smaller lakes and the pass between them make a remote, rewarding approach to the main lake.

Best Time to Visit Ratti Gali Lake

The realistic season is July to September. Snow lingers on the approach into early summer, and on the Kaghan side the road towards Sharda can stay closed until mid-season, with glacier and landslide damage common. By October, cold and snow return.

July and August are the peak months for flowers and also for domestic visitors. Weather changes fast at 3,600 m, so plan a spare day.

How to Get to Ratti Gali Lake

The standard approach is along the Neelum road from Muzaffarabad to Dowarian, then by jeep and on foot. Note that this road runs close to the LoC for much of its length.

Times come from recent route descriptions and vary with road and weather conditions.

Jeep Safety on the Approach

In July 2024 a tourist jeep fell into a water channel on the Ratti Gali route; two people died, three were reported missing and eight were rescued. The authorities then suspended jeeps pending fitness certificates and road improvements. Only travel with a well-maintained vehicle and an experienced local driver, and never pressure a driver to continue in bad conditions.

Where to Stay

In season, simple tented camps operate below the lake. On the Neelum road, Sharda has several hotels and guest houses, and there is basic accommodation around Dowarian at the start of the jeep track. Expect simple facilities everywhere; electricity and hot water are not guaranteed.

Suggested Itineraries

Neelum approach (3–4 days from Islamabad)

Day 1 to Muzaffarabad and on up the valley. Day 2 by jeep to base camp, hike to the lake and camp. Day 3 back down to the valley, and a long drive out on Day 4.

Kaghan crossing (4–5 days from Naran)

Jeep to Jalkhad and on towards Noorinar, camp at Noori Lake, cross the Ratti Gali pass to Hans Raj Lake, reach the main lake, then descend 5–8 hours to Dowarian.

What to Pack

  • A warm sleeping bag and insulated jacket; nights are near freezing
  • Waterproof jacket and trousers
  • Broken-in trekking boots
  • Sun hat, sunglasses and high-factor sunscreen for strong UV at altitude
  • Water purification and high-energy snacks
  • Passport and visa copies for checkpoints

Our trekking gear guide has a full checklist.

Culture & Etiquette

The Neelum Valley is home to conservative mountain communities. Dress modestly, ask before photographing people, and never photograph soldiers, checkpoints or military positions, which are common in this border region. Pack out all rubbish; litter is a growing problem at popular lakes.

Safety and Practical Tips

Travel advisories: We want to be clear. The UK FCDO advises against all travel within 10 miles of the Line of Control and against all but essential travel to the rest of AJK. The US State Department says do not travel to the LoC for any reason. Because the Neelum road runs so close to the LoC, the standard route to the lake falls inside the FCDO’s no-travel zone, and travel against advice can invalidate your insurance. Read the FCDO advice, the US advisory and our travel insurance policy.

Recent tensions: During the India–Pakistan crisis of spring 2025, tourists left the Neelum Valley as fears of conflict grew, and residents recalled shelling in 2019, as AP reported.

Altitude: At over 3,600 m, mild altitude symptoms are common. Ascend steadily and descend if you feel unwell.

RATTI GALI LAKE TRAVEL

Ratti Gali Lake Highlights at a Glance

Few lakes in Kashmir match its setting of glacial water, snowy ridges and flower meadows, which is why it has become so popular with Pakistani trekkers.

For foreign travellers the scenery is not the issue; the location close to the Line of Control is. If current advice rules it out for you, Pakistan has many equally beautiful alpine lakes elsewhere.

Ratti Gali Lake FAQs

Is Ratti Gali Lake safe for foreign tourists?

The main route runs along the Neelum Valley close to the Line of Control. The UK FCDO advises against all travel within 10 miles of the LoC and the US says do not travel to the LoC, so most foreign travellers should consider alternatives and check their insurance.

How high is Ratti Gali Lake?

About 3,683 m (12,083 ft), although some sources round it to 3,600–3,700 m.

When is the best time to visit?

July to September. Outside this window snow usually blocks the approach.

How long is the hike?

From base camp it is around 1–2 hours on foot, after a jeep ride of about 2–2.5 hours from Dowarian. Horses are usually available.

Can I reach it from Naran?

Yes, experienced trekkers can cross from Jalkhad in Kaghan via Noori Lake and Hans Raj Lake, taking at least three days. The route still ends in the Neelum Valley at Dowarian.

Are there hotels at the lake?

No. Seasonal tented camps operate below the lake, and hotels are found down in the valley, for example at Sharda.

What are good alternatives?

Lake Saiful Muluk in Kaghan, or Rush Lake and the Patundas meadows in Gilgit-Baltistan, offer high alpine scenery away from the LoC.
