Where Is Lake Saiful Muluk?

Lake Saiful Muluk lies at the northern end of the Kaghan Valley in Mansehra district, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Naran, the valley’s main tourist town at about 2,500 m, is the base: a rough jeep road climbs about 9 km east from town, gaining roughly 700 m to reach the lake.

The lake formed when glacial moraines blocked a stream; meltwater filled the hollow left as the ice retreated. Its outflow feeds the Kunhar River, which runs the length of the valley. Rising above the southern shore is Malika Parbat, at 5,290 m the highest peak in the Kaghan Valley and the wider Hazara region.

The Legend of Saiful Muluk

The story tells of Saiful Muluk, a prince of Egypt, who dreams of a beautiful fairy, Badi-ul-Jamal, and searches the world until he finds her at this lake. The Sufi poet Mian Muhammad Bakhsh retold the tale in Punjabi verse, and his poem is still recited across Pakistan, which is why so many domestic visitors feel a personal connection to the place.

Whatever you make of the legend, it shapes the atmosphere: families come to see ‘the lake of the fairies’ as much as the scenery, and you will hear the story told many times by drivers, hoteliers and fellow visitors.

A path runs along part of the shore, and a few minutes from the crowds near the jeep stand the lake becomes surprisingly peaceful. On calm mornings the water mirrors the surrounding peaks.

  2. 02
    Viewpoint

    Photograph Malika Parbat

The ‘Queen of the Mountains’ rises above the lake to 5,290 m. Early light, before clouds build, gives the clearest views and reflections.

    Adventure

    Hike to Ansoo Lake

Ansoo (‘Teardrop’) Lake, at about 4,126 m, was spotted by Pakistan Air Force pilots in 1993. The route from Saiful Muluk is long and steep, so go with a local guide in settled weather.

  4. 04
    Nature

    Detour to Lulusar Lake

Further up the valley towards Babusar, Lulusar Lake at about 3,410 m is described as the largest natural lake in Hazara and a main source of the Kunhar. It is about 50 km from Naran.

    Drink chai by the water

Small huts and stalls near the jeep stand sell tea, fries, cold drinks and snacks. Carry your rubbish back down with you.

Best Time to Visit Lake Saiful Muluk

The lake is a summer destination. Snow usually blocks the jeep road for much of winter and spring, and the lake itself freezes. Access normally opens once the Kaghan road and the track from Naran are cleared, and the most reliable months are June to September.

Monsoon rain from July to August can trigger flash floods and landslides. In late July 2026 floods washed away part of the road from Naran, about 200 jeeps carrying stranded tourists had to be rescued, and travel to the lake was suspended until repairs, Dawn reported. Build flexibility into any monsoon-season plan.

Pakistani holidays, Eid and summer weekends bring huge crowds. For a quieter visit, go on a weekday and arrive early.
