K2, standing at 8,611 meters, is the second-highest mountain in the world after Mount Everest (8,848 meters). Known as the “Savage Mountain,” it presents a formidable challenge for climbers, with its steep faces and perilous conditions that make it both a captivating and life-threatening adventure. Towering over the Baltoro Glacier in the Karakoram Range, K2 straddles the border between Pakistan and China, inviting only the most determined mountaineers to attempt its ascent.
The mountain’s fearsome reputation is rooted in history. Attempts to reach its peak failed repeatedly in the early 20th century until a groundbreaking Italian expedition led by Ardito Desio succeeded on July 31, 1954. Despite their victory, the summit attempt resulted in severe frostbite for Pakistani climber Amir Mehdi and left an enduring tale of hardship and rivalry.
With its name derived from the Karakoram Range (K) and its position as the second-highest peak (2), K2 has seen almost 400 successful ascents to date, a testament to the resilience and determination of climbers from around the world.
